I can't say that I will miss Ted Kennedy in the world of politics but I will say he will be missed by his party. He was an old school liberal who clung to his beliefs until death.
One might question his personal life, but his political life was successful. Rarely challenged, if at all for re-election to the Senate. He held strongly to his political beliefs and whether you agreed or disagreed with him, you always knew where he stood. For that I can respect him.
I think he learned a long time back opinion polls didn't matter. He always held his liberal ground. That's the problem most of his colleagues in the House and Senate have today. They sway with the changing climate of public opinion in order to win reelection, and to be fair it's not just Democrats. If our Conservative counterparts had held to their core values the past eight years we wouldn't be where we are today.
So farewell Ted and may God have mercy on your soul. We never agreed on anything except for the fact you were a true blue liberal.

The Edisto Joe Outlook
Note: There is a bit of irony in Kennedy's passing. The 60 votes needed to advance health care reform in the Senate is likely now to fall back on the Massachusetts Government. In order to appoint a successor to Kennedy, the state must hold a special election no sooner than 145 days and no later than 160. The Governor cannot make the appointment, as is the case in other states. The law was changed in 2004 when John Kerry was running for president in order to keep Governor Mitt Romney from appointing a Republican to replace Kerry. Kennedy, before his death, pleaded with the Massachusetts Legislature to change the law back for the sole purpose of ensuring a successor was in place upon his death. This indeed will be interesting to watch in the coming days.
