In the court of public opinion the Democrats have lost on the health care debate. They can claim that they had no bipartisan support from Republicans, only obstructionist tactics but it's not true. President Obama has always had bipartisan support on the
health care issue. The problem is simply that the support stems from the electorate and not members of Congress. The debate has crossed over into party affiliation, banding Republicans, Democrats, and Independents together in voicing their opposition to the current legislation and "fixes" before Congress today. A resounding defeat in the Massachusetts Senate election to fill the late Ted Kennedy's seat to Republican Scott Brown should have been enough to drive the message home. At that time hopes for the death of this bill looked good especially since the Massachusetts election no longer gave the Senate a filibuster proof majority. The country had great hopes that the Administration would now turn their attention to the urgent matter of restoring the economy and creating meaningful legislation that would help put Americans back to work. It is now approaching the end of the first quarter in 2010, the Easter break for Congress is approaching and every bit of the Obama machine is still hard at work, desperately trying to salvage health care and ram it down the throats of Americans who loudly proclaim they want no part of this vile, crooked and constitutionally illegal legislation. Their voices seem not to matter to the President or the leaders in both houses of Congress. It has now become a battle over ideology. Big Government verses the will of the people and a free market system. Never before has legislation of this magnitude, opposed by so many, been handled in such underhanded ways by a party in power. Closed door meetings, payoffs, special interest exceptions, inclusions, exclusions, all meant to sway a handful of politicians to vote yes. It's hard to tell if those Democrats opposed are standing on principal or waiting for a bigger piece of the pie.
The fate and future of this country rests in the hands of an arrogant and egotistical group that refuses to acknowledge the wishes of a majority they represent. Choosing instead to forge ahead with an ill guided and twisted mentality that they know whats best, even resorting to questionable, if not illegal procedures to fulfill their vision and by-passing any obstacle by simply making up new rules to the game as they go along.
The struggling efforts by Democrats to find yea votes among themselves is proven to be a much harder task than Pelosi envisioned. In desperation she has turned to the House Rules Committee Chair, Louise Slaughter who has the perfect solution. She proposes to bypass the vote problem by presenting a new rule which will simply "deem" the Senate bill as passed once the House agrees on the compromise measure that will have the "fixes" they want in the Senate version. Pelosi is said to be seriously considering the "Slaughter Solution" as an option. That is either the height of arrogance or desperation, probably both. With liberal Democrats they go hand in hand. When desperation sets in their arrogance takes over and they throw rules and regulations out the window choosing instead to make up their own, ignoring such insignificant facts as to whether their actions are even allowed by the Constitution. In this instance they have shown that they themselves are not confident enough they have written good legislation, instead they would resort to slick tricks and maneuvering to get around rules and procedures that might prevent them from achieving their goal.
Every day Americans see this sorry drama unfolding on the television news and talk radio and their anger builds toward the leadership in Washington. They see the country drifting toward socialism. They fear the Government passing laws against majority opinion that take away personal rights and freedoms and seek control of the economy. Their myopic vision for America is wrong and they continually reject the notion that those opposed are nothing more than an insignificant group of malcontents shouting slogans such as "We want to take our country back!" For the life of them they simply cannot understand how these people come up with such ridiculous notions. The Democrats have lusted for power and control for so long that now that they have it they have completely forgotten who gave it to them and under what guidelines that power is given. They have become the child that tears into the package to get the contents and ignores the sticker clearly posted on the front that states "Read Directions First Before Opening."
